The controversy about the introduction of wind turbines rages on. It is probably true to say that most people do not like the idea of having 100metre tall pylons on our doorstep, but there are some in favour.
It has been sensibly argued that we may have to choose between them and the threat of global warming. Others support the idea in principle as the way forward for the future.
We have a duty to conserve the beauty of the South Hams, but if anyone objects they are accused of that awful word nimbyism. And what about the electricity pylons that already criss-cross our countryside?
Someone even thought the spectacle of the turbine pylons might cause tourists to stop and gawp, thus causing traffic delays on the Kingsbridge-Totnes road. That wind farms are things of beauty has not been widely argued, but one wonders what the reaction would be if an eminent sculptor wanted to place a huge statue on top of one of our lovely hills?
I suppose that, being in the South Hams, it all depends on whom it commemorates. But don't let us give them any ideas...
WORD reaches us that Neighbourhood News is viewed in some quarters of Kingsbridge as taking an anti-youth stance. This is definitely not the case - we're only against antisocial youth (or any other age group). Why don't the youth workers of this town offer us some inspiring stories about their young charges? We would be glad to publish them.
CONGRATULATIONS to those householders in the town who went to great trouble and expense to provide cheerful lighting decorations on their outside walls and in their gardens, for all to enjoy. There were some particularly eyecatching displays in Trebblepark. Well done everybody!
