SWW rules out summer hosepipe ban

8th May 2007

South West Water (SWW) has announced that there will be no water restrictions this summer.

This is the 11th consecutive year without water restrictions, according to the Exeter-based company

Over the past 24 months, the South East has experienced its worst drought conditions for many years.

However, the South West has fortunately missed out on these severe droughts.

As a result, SWW's reservoirs are about 90 per cent full, 6 per cent higher than at this time last year and 40 per cent higher than last November.

Dr Stephen Bird, South West Water: "We are optimistic that we have sufficiently boosted water resources in the South West to cope with this year's peak summer demand."

The firm has also praised its customers for using water wisely.

Sixty per cent of households are now on a water meter and thousands more convert every month, according to SWW.

Dr Stephen Bird, SWW's operations director, said: "We are optimistic that we have sufficiently boosted water resources in the South West to cope with this year's peak summer demand.

"Over the last 11 years the company has made significant investment into improving our water resources position by reducing leakage, implementing pumped storage and making massive enhancements to water treatment and the distribution network.

"We have also recently purchased Park Lake, a former china clay pit on Bodmin Moor, to boost supplies in Cornwall.

"We cannot afford to become complacent over this vital issue and South West Water continually reviews its water resource strategy to meet future population growth and climate change."
