Plymouth's impressive Drake Circus shopping centre has scooped another prestigious national award.

The centre received the Retail and Leisure Property Awards' 'Best Shopping Centre - New or Refurbished' prize at a glittering ceremony held at London's prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel.

Drake Circus beat off stiff competition from rival centres Frenchgate in Doncaster, The Mall Liberty 2 in Romford, Palace Exchange in Enfield and The Brunswick in London.

The award was given based on the deliberations of the Retail and Leisure Academy made up of representatives from the Shop Agents' Society, the Leisure Property Forum and the Leisure Society Forum. The event was managed by Property Week.

Receiving the coveted prize was Graham Corser, director of P&O Estates Limited. He said: "We are delighted that Drake Circus has won such a prestigious award.

"The competition was fierce, but the design, ease of use and popularity of Drake Circus won through."

Mike Jones, general manager at Drake Circus, added: "Our team at Drake Circus is very pleased to have won this award.

"The shopping centre continues to be popular with shoppers throughout the region and beyond, with visitor numbers in the region of 12 million since opening."

In March, Drake Circus won the Retail Week 'Shopping Location of the Year' award.
