Awful Kings suffer shock Penryn defeat

Kingsbridge are facing relegation back to the Devon and Cornwall league

Kingsbridge are facing relegation back to the Devon and Cornwall league

16th April 2008

Penryn RFC 6-0 Kingsbridge RFC

Kingsbridge's inconsistent season hit a new low on Saturday when they became only the second team (after Ivybridge) to lose against basement team Penryn.

The Cornish hosts had already been relegated weeks ago after becoming the league's whipping boys and finding themselves cast well adrift at the foot of the table.

The only way to describe this game is that it was a very poor match, played by two very poor teams and did very little to keep either set of supporters interested.

Obviously the home spectators would be far happier than those that had travelled across the border, as they had not seen their team win at home all season until this game.

This had been pinpointed as a "must win" for the Blue and Whites in order to prevent them from getting dragged into the relegation battle at the foot of the table.

However, this loss, combined with Withycombe's victory over Bude, sees Kingsbridge still in danger of finishing the season in the bottom three. It is likely that only two sides will be relegated but the RFU have been known to relegate three, four or even five teams before.

Kingsbridge can now finish no higher than their current position of ninth and go into their final match of the season on Saturday, against eighth place Minehead, knowing that victory must be achieved if they are to give themselves the best chance of preserving their Western Counties League status for another year.

The game was far from a spectacle and remained scoreless in the first half. It was only just after the interval that the deadlock was broken when the hosts converted a penalty for offside. They doubled that lead midway through the second half with a second successful kick at goal to lead 6-0.

Kingsbridge had their opportunities to get on the scoresheet but their final decision-making let them down when they should have been able to convert the scoring chances that came their way.

Late in the game the frustrations of both teams boiled over and minor niggles saw both teams reduced to 14 men before the referee decided to curtail any possible further problems by blowing up a few minutes early.

As previously stated Kingsbridge will need to dig deep into their reserves this week when they face their final league match and the visit of Minehead to High House. Kick Off is at 3pm. Kingsbridge A XV and the Colts XV have no matches.
