Gifts for the wedding party

30th November 2007

It is sometimes the custom to give members of the wedding party small gifts, although this is left entirely at the discretion of the Bride and Groom.

As a token of thanks for assisting at the wedding, small gifts may be given to Bridesmaids, the Matron of Honour and perhaps Pages.

The choice of such presents would depend on finances, and this is something which is traditionally paid for by the Groom. These gifts would be bought after discussion with the Bride who would know what he could afford as well as what gifts would be acceptable.

A necklace, bracelet or ear-rings are worth considering. If it were decided to give jewellery, it may be an idea to present it just before the wedding so that it could be worn and therefore appear in the wedding photographs.

As a page would normally be very young, a present to him is not easy. A small clock, a small pewter or a silver mug are worth considering.

A small gift for each of the Ushers may also be considered for their efforts in helping at the wedding: perhaps an engraved pen, or handkerchiefs embroidered with the wedding date and a message.

Presents are also sometimes exchanged between the Bride and Groom, although this is very much a matter of personal taste and depends on the couple's finances and needs.

A string of pearls or a watch would make an acceptable present for most Brides. A wrist watch is a suggestion for the Groom, or he might prefer a commemorative mug which would find its way to their future home.

On the other hand the couple might decide to buy something they could share and perhaps might not otherwise afford, which could range from stereo equipment to something luxurious, such as a new car.
