Devon-based company Beaming Baby offers mothers a range of organic baby products which promote the ethos of natural living for them and their children.
Here they tell 999Kingsbridge why running an environmentally friendly business doesn't have to mean a sacrifice of profit:
Big brands rule the roost in the fast moving world of consumer goods. As a small family business we have to develop cutting edge niche products and stay one step ahead, in order to give our customers what they want. Being environmentally friendly is our way of differentiating ourselves from the big boys; they see going organic and carbon neutral as a sacrifice of profit, we see it as our future.
At Beaming Baby, we give 10 per cent of our profits to charity. I'm not sure if this brings in many new customers, but it gives us a really nice feeling! The money goes to Baby Lifeline for hospital equipment for premature babies and SANCCOB who rescue penguins from oil slicks on the South African coast. We also donate to reforestation projects in South America.
Any farmer will tell you that going organic is no mean feat! To start with, the land used must be clear from artificial fertilisers and pesticides - this process can take two years or more and can involve negotiating with neighbouring farmers to ensure there is no contamination from their fields. Then all materials used on the farm must be approved for organic production. New crop rotation and cover crops will be introduced to maintain soil quality and protect against pests and even after all this, the productivity of the land per acre will be far lower than when tonnes of chemical fertilisers and pesticides are used.
The farmers who produce the organic ingredients in our products have all been through the process of organic certification. This makes our ingredients some of the most expensive available, but we can rest assured that there are no traces of chemical fertilisers or pesticides in our ingredients.
Our own formulations are certified and our factories are inspected regularly to check every aspect of production is in line with the Organic Food Federation standards. This makes our baby wipes and bath time products the purest available for your baby.
Although organic production is generally more expensive, being carbon neutral can sometimes save money! Using low energy light bulbs, recycling cardboard boxes in the warehouse, using personal heating systems rather than heating large spaces are just a few examples. Converting to renewable source electricity is almost cost neutral these days as the cost of oil, coal and gas soars.
We also keep our costs down by 'thinking small'. We have no fat cats, no big head office and no company cars. So we can compete with the big brands in the shops.
At £2.99 Beaming Baby Organic Baby Wipes cost the same as Johnson & Johnson Sensitive and at £3.99 our bottles cost the same as Avent, the two biggest chemical-rich brands on the High Street!
Being environmentally friendly is no sacrifice for us - in fact it's our lifeblood!
